Tocopherol (Vitamin E)

  • Common Name: Vitamin E
  • INCI Name: Tocopherol
  • Source: Plant-derived (commonly extracted from sunflower, soybean, or wheat germ oil)
  • Botanical Origin: Glycine max (soybean), Helianthus annuus (sunflower), Triticum vulgare (wheat germ)
  • Family: Fabaceae / Asteraceae / Poaceae
  • Extracted From: Unsaponifiable fraction of plant oils rich in tocopherols
  • Required Dosage: 0.05–1% depending on antioxidant function or skin benefit

2. Properties

  • Function: Antioxidant, skin-conditioning, lipid protection
  • Specificities: Free radical neutralisation, supports barrier repair, improves shelf life of oils
  • Key Specificities:
    Tocopherol helps strengthen the skin’s lipid barrier and neutralise environmental damage. Naturally occurring in many cold-pressed oils, it protects both the skin and the product itself. It’s well tolerated and ideal for sensitive skin or minimal routines that rely on antioxidant support.

3. Safety Issues

  • Method of Preservation: Self-preserving due to antioxidant properties
  • Contraindications: Extremely rare allergy to pure tocopherol
  • Usage Precautions: May oxidise if exposed to heat or light for extended periods — best stored in amber packaging
